2.3 A balanced diet

A diet that contains all the nutrients the body needs, in the right amounts, is called a balanced diet. Carbohydrates and fats give the body energy. Proteins build and repair it. Vitamins and minerals protect it against disease.

A balanced diet must also carry roughage and water. Roughage is the fibre in food that the body cannot digest; it helps the body remove waste.

Fig. 2.3 · Nutrients in a day’s meals for a child aged eleven

Activity 2.1

List everything you ate yesterday. Against each item, mark which nutrient it supplied. Which nutrient appears least often?

Balanced diet31

Cooking makes food easier to digest and improves its taste, but some nutrients are lost in the process. Vitamin C is lost when food is heated for a long time, and again when cooking water is thrown away.

Eating too much of one nutrient is as much an imbalance as eating too little of another. A diet heavy in carbohydrates and short of proteins can leave a child undernourished even when the plate is full.

Exercises 2.1

  1. 1. Name two energy-giving foods and two body-building foods.
  2. 2. Why is roughage necessary, although the body cannot digest it?
  3. 3. Which nutrient is lost when vegetables are boiled for a long time?
  4. 4. A meal has rice, dal and a green vegetable. Which nutrient is it short of, and what would you add?
  5. 5. Compare a day’s meals at home with the chart in Fig. 2.3. Where do the two differ most?

Commission AM-0416, Class 6 Science, 208 pp

The curriculum changed. The academic calendar did not.

NCF 2023 has put every K–12 publisher on a deadline that cannot move. The question is not whether the list needs rebuilding — it is how much of it reaches the next session.

One year to the next session

Scroll — both lanes run at their real rate

Produced in-house

4–6 months a title · 2–3 titles a year

Title 3 only lands if every title that year runs at the fast end of the range.

Sequential capacity on one production line, from the two published figures: 4–6 months a title in-house, twenty working days commissioned. A real slate is also limited by your own review turnaround and by how many titles you can run at once — which is the conversation the scoping call is for.

Commission AM-0416, Class 6 Science, 208 pp

Eight handoffs, or one

A commission collapses the chain into a single supplier carrying a single date. Five stages across twenty working days — three need your desk: the scoping call, and two approvals your editors already do today.

The sixty-second version

The whole argument, in a minute

A short film on what a title costs to produce today and what a commission changes. Music, no narration — the chapters below say what it covers, and each one seeks the film.

What it covers

Where a figure in the film differs from Pricing, the Pricing page is current — and the written order governs either way.

Commission AM-0416, Class 6 Science, 208 pp

Alignment you can hand to a school, not claim on a back cover

CBSE’s August 2024 circular requires schools to publish their prescribed book list and to exercise care with private titles. A series that can evidence its alignment on paper is materially easier to adopt.

If we deliver past the agreed date, 25% of the fee is credited for each completed week of delay, up to the full fee. It applies automatically, without negotiation.

  • The condition

The schedule pauses whenever delivery depends on something from your side — source files, a decision, a review round. Every pause is logged in a tracker you can see.

  • Your review window

Two correction rounds are included. If a round comes back later than three working days, the delivery date moves by the same number of days.

  • Scope of change

Changes to the approved blueprint after production has begun are quoted separately. This protects the date for both of us.
